Week 9 Blog
This week it was very interesting to see how all of our past units such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, math, and robotics come together with our current unit as we explore how they are all used in space. But, for me, the coolest relationship within this unit was between art and zero gravity in space. When it comes to the relationship between art and space, we are early on introduced to astronomer and mathematician, Nicolai Copernicus. He published an early depiction of his heliocentric model of the solar system in 1512, which for the first time scientifically, showed the sun in the middle of the solar system.

On may 22, 1993, a sculpture called the Cosmic Dancer was launched to the Russian Mir space station on a Progress rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This sculpture was the first three-dimensional artwork specifically conceived for a space habitat. The project was designed to investigate the properties of sculpture in weightlessness in order to evaluate the integration of art into the human space program.

Another exhibition curated by Kathleen Forde called Dancing on the Ceiling which is informed by a broad exploration of the metaphorical theme of transcendence and the actual use of zero gravity in order to express humans attempt to defy it but simultaneously show that they can never escape it.

  1. Great blog post Sasha. I liked how you connected all of the past lessons such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, math and robotics and how they come together with space. My favorite part of the lesson was also the relationship between art and zero gravity. Good examples and pictures as well.
